This Privacy Policy explains how Purple Peppercorn Pty Ltd (ABN 35 698 539 123), operating under the registered business name Amperly, collects, uses, stores, and protects your personal information when you use the Amperly platform at amperly.com.au.

Short version: We collect only what we need to run the platform. Your data stays in Australia. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising. You can request access, correction, or deletion at any time.

We are bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Our platform is designed and operated in Australia, and all data is hosted within Australia.

What we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: display name, email address, date of birth (18+ verification), password hash
  • Profile information: location (suburb, state, postcode), bio, interests, profile photos
  • Content: messages sent in rooms or direct messages, stories you post, and any content you upload
  • Payment information: for Plus subscriptions or one-time purchases, processed directly by Stripe. We do not store card numbers — Stripe holds payment credentials under their own PCI-DSS certification
  • Communications: emails you send to our support or privacy team

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: pages visited, rooms joined, features used, session duration — collected via Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymisation enabled
  • Device information: browser type, operating system, screen size — used for product improvement only
  • Connection data: anonymised IP address (not stored in identifiable form)

Information we do not collect

  • Precise GPS location — we use suburb-level location entered by you, not device GPS
  • Contacts from your phone or device
  • Biometric data of any kind
  • Sensitive information (race, religion, health, sexual orientation) unless you choose to share it in a room or profile

How we use your information

We use your personal information only for purposes directly related to providing the Amperly service:

  • Creating and managing your account
  • Displaying your profile to other verified members
  • Enabling real-time conversation in rooms and direct messages
  • Calculating approximate distance between users (using suburb-level coordinates via Haversine formula)
  • Processing payments for Plus subscriptions and one-time purchases via Stripe
  • Sending transactional emails (account verification, password reset, payment receipts)
  • Sending platform notifications (new messages, story replies) — only if you have opted in
  • Sending marketing emails — only if you expressly opted in during sign-up, in compliance with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth). You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • Improving the platform through anonymised analytics data
  • Investigating safety and abuse reports
  • Complying with legal obligations
We do not use your data to train machine learning or AI models. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their own commercial purposes.

Sharing your data

We share your personal information only in the following limited circumstances:

Service providers

We use the following third-party services to operate the platform. Each is bound by data processing agreements and our instructions:

  • Firebase (Google): user authentication and real-time database, hosted in ap-southeast-2 (Sydney)
  • Amazon Web Services: file storage (S3), content delivery (CloudFront), computing (Lambda), and user records (DynamoDB), hosted in ap-southeast-2 (Sydney)
  • Stripe: payment processing. Stripe operates under their own privacy policy and PCI-DSS certification. We share only the minimum data required to process a transaction.
  • Amazon Chime SDK: video calling infrastructure, used only when you initiate a video call
  • Google Analytics 4: anonymised usage analytics with IP anonymisation enabled

Legal requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by Australian law, court order, or in response to a valid request from law enforcement authorities. We will notify you of any such request unless prohibited by law from doing so.

Business transfers

If Purple Peppercorn Pty Ltd is acquired, merged, or substantially its assets sold, your personal information may be transferred to the successor entity. We will notify you via email and a prominent notice on the platform before any such transfer.

With your consent

In any other circumstance, we will seek your explicit consent before sharing your information.

Where your data is stored

All Amperly data is hosted within Australia. We do not transfer your personal information offshore. Both Firebase and AWS are configured to use the ap-southeast-2 (Sydney) region exclusively.

This means your data is subject to Australian law at all times. We have not entered into any cross-border data transfer arrangements.

How long we keep your data

  • Active accounts: we retain your personal information for as long as your account remains active
  • Account deletion: when you delete your account, we delete your personal information within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain certain records
  • Messages: room messages are retained for 90 days after posting, then deleted. Direct messages are retained until either party deletes the conversation
  • Stories: automatically deleted 24 hours after posting
  • Payment records: retained for 7 years as required by Australian tax law
  • Safety and abuse records: records related to account suspensions or bans may be retained for up to 3 years to prevent re-registration

Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:

  • Access: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correction: request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal information
  • Deletion: request deletion of your personal information (subject to our legal obligations)
  • Opt-out: withdraw consent for marketing communications at any time
  • Complaint: lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@amperly.com.au. We will respond within 30 days as required by the Privacy Act.

Most requests can also be handled directly through your account settings — you can edit or delete your profile, download your data, and close your account without contacting us.

Cookies and analytics

Amperly uses a minimal set of cookies:

  • Authentication cookies: session tokens issued by Firebase Auth, required for you to remain logged in. These are strictly necessary and cannot be opted out of
  • Analytics cookies: Google Analytics 4, with IP anonymisation enabled and advertising features disabled. These are anonymised and contain no personal data

We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking cookies, or third-party cookies for any purpose other than the above. We do not participate in any ad networks or retargeting programmes.

Children and minors

Amperly is strictly for people aged 18 and over. We verify date of birth at registration and do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.

If you believe a person under 18 has created an account, please contact us immediately at safety@amperly.com.au. We will investigate and remove the account within 24 hours of a verified report.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by:

  • Email to the address associated with your account, at least 14 days before the change takes effect
  • A notice displayed prominently on the platform

Continued use of Amperly after the effective date of any change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. If you do not agree with a change, you may close your account before the effective date.
